    In the spring of 1987, Die Hard producer Joel Silver and director John McTiernan saw the play Les Liaisons Dangereuses, that starred Alan Rickman. Overwhelmed (Rickman was nominated for a Tony Award as Best Actor), they immediately decided they had found Hans Gruber for their upcoming movie.

    Rickman's chilling performance as the cool, calculating terrorist Hans Gruber provides a classic counterpoint to Willis' McClane. "When Bruce and I first met," says Rickman, "we thought that if Hans and McClane could oddly enough develop a relationship while communicating over the CB, it would serve the final conflict rather well. We wanted to steer away from stereotypical hero and villain types of behavior and try to be as normal as possible on the surface."

    Although his success as the manipulative Vicomte de Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses and the terminally sinister Obadiah Sope in the B.B.C. series The Barchester Chronicles points to his obvious skill as an actor, Rickman actually trained as a graphic designer at the Chelsea School of Art. He worked for three years managing a design group before trying his hand at acting and was 26 when he entered the Royal Academy of Art, paying his way through by doing graphic design jobs. After seven years of performing the classics in London at The Royal Court, Hampstead and Bush Theatres, Rickman signed on with the Royal Shakespeare Company, where in 1985 he created the role of Le Vicomte de Valmont; the play eventually moved to London's West End before crossing the Atlantic.

    Since Die Hard, Rickman was seen in, among others, January Man, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Quigley Down Under, Truly, Madly, Deeply, and Bob Roberts.
